In my previous thoughts about Mild Madness I focused on the club exchanges. The more natural way to think about it is to realize it's the result of what happens when you have a feeder and two feedees with one feedee doing Jim's 3-count starting right and the other doing Jim's 3-count starting left, second beat left. That's the reason I used to think of Mild Madness as Jim's 2-out-of-3-count. However, that's not the way that juggling math works when you're dealing with patterns that aren't regular. Similarly, you can take a pattern like where the feeder is doing Jim's 2-out-of-3-count and when you divide it between two feedees, they're not each doing Jim's 3-count. In that previous post I created Straight Jacket. I want to describe it according to what the feedees are doing but I first need to go over some definitions.
My definition of Jim's Mad n-count is when a juggler passes diagonal on the first throw and does self throws for the remaining n-1 throws. My definition of Jim's Mild n-count is when a juggler passes straight on the first throw and does self throws for the remaining n-1 throws. My definition of Jim's Mad n-out-of-m-count is when a juggler passes diagonal on the first n throws and does self throws for the remaining m-n throws. My definition of Jim's Mild n-out-of-m-count is when a juggler passes straight on the first n throws and does self throws for the remaining m-n throws.
That's brings us to Carl's n-count and Carl's n-out-of-m-count. Carl's Mad n-count is when a juggler passes diagonal on the first throw and alternates self throws and flips following the alternating pattern for the remaining n-1 throws. Carl's Mad n-out-of-m-count is when a juggler alternates n passes starting diagonal on the first throw and alternates self throws and flips following the alternating pattern for the remaining m-n throws. Carl's Mild n-count is when a juggler passes straight on the first throw and alternates flips and self throws following the alternating pattern for the remaining n-1 throws. Carl's Mild n-out-of-m-count is when a juggler alternates n passes starting straight on the first throw and alternates self throws and flips following the alternating pattern for the remaining m-n throws. Note that an even number of flips can be removed and the remaining flip can be on any self throw.
Carl's 3-count (Top is Mad, Bottom is Mild)
poss-crass (5) flip-zelf self-flip
T: crass zelf flip
B: poss flip self
Carl's 4-count (Top is Mad, Bottom is Mild)
poss-crass (5) flip-zelf self-flip slip-self
T: crass zelf flip self
B: poss flip self slip (or poss self zelf self)
Carl's Chocolate Bar (Top is Mad, Bottom is Mild)
poss-crass (5) cross-spass (12) self-flip slip-self
T: crass spass flip self
B: poss cross self slip
zelf is a left self. slip is a left flip.
Straight Jacket is the result of what happens when you have a feeder and two feedees with one feedee doing Carl's 3-count starting right and the other doing Carl's 3-count starting right, second beat right.
